Historic Gold Commemoratives

In celebration of the 10th anniversary sale of the S.S. Central America’s shipwrecked gold, some of America’s most elusive national treasure is now available. Legacy Precious Metals is proud to offer our customers a unique opportunity to own a piece of "The Greatest Treasure Ever Found." These coins have truly captured the fascination of gold investors and coin collectors alike and will continue to for decades ahead.

After resting at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for over 125 years, the 30 tons of gold that was originally loaded aboard the S.S. Central America finally resurfaced in 1987 when the Columbus-America Discovery Group uncovered the long lost shipwreck. Aboard the ship were newly minted gold coins from the San Francisco Mint, privately minted gold coins and bars and a mountain of 50 pound commercial-sized gold ingots. The treasure recovered from the "Ship of Gold" is valued today well over $150 million dollars.

The most significant and largest of the commercial ingots recovered from the ship was an 80 pound gold bar later named the Eureka Bar. The Eureka Bar was made by the Kellogg and Humbert Company who were one of the most prominent gold refiners during the California Gold Rush. At the time of the shipwreck, the Eureka Bar had a face value in gold of $17,455 dollars. In 2002 the bar made history being purchased by a private investor for $8 million dollars.

If you are wondering what happened to all the other 50 pound commercial ingots and how much they sold for, well, that is what makes this Historic Gold Rush Commemorative Proof Set such a great offer!

When it became time to sell the S.S. Central America sunken treasure, a problem arose because most of the gold was in the form of oversized commercial ingots that the majority of the public could not afford. After some contemplation, the problem was solved by a genius marketing idea… melt down the oversized gold rush ingots and re-create two of the most prized privately minted California Gold Rush coins from that era, the 1855 $50 Kellogg & Co. Proof and the 1850 $10 Baldwin & Co. "Horseman."

Classified as ultra rarities, the 1855 $50 Kellogg & Co. Proof and the 1850 $10 Baldwin & Co. "Horseman" not only are two of the rarest Pioneer Gold coins, they are also two of the most valuable. Today only 13 original $50 Kelloggs are known to exist with an average value around $400,000 dollars each. The finest known sold at auction in 2007 for $750,000 dollars. The original "Horseman" is just as rare, only 15 coins believed to be in existence having an average value of $220,000 for a mint state coin. The finest known was offered for sale in 2007 for $1,000,000 dollars. An interesting bonus fact regarding the 1855 $50 Kellogg & Co. Proof is that the same original dies used to make the original coins still exist today. Even more intriguing is the same original dies were re-used to make the 1855 $50 Kellogg Restrike.

The 1855 $50 Kellogg Restrike

Referred to as "King of the Territorials," the 1855 $50 Kellogg Restrike is an impressive 2.5 ounces of pure California Gold Rush gold. In 2001, under the direction of the California Historical Society, authorization was granted to re-produce reproduce a limited number of 1855 $50 Kellogg Restrikes. Not only are these coins exact in size and appearance as the originals, what else makes these coins so special is that every coin is 100% made from actual Kellogg & Humbert Co. Gold Ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America. This coin has become an instant classic among gold investors and collectors alike. In fact, a lot of our new customers start out by purchasing this coin and once they get this coin in their hands, their response is always the same, they love it! The original sale of the Restrike has been sold out for quite a while and most coins sold for $5,000 a piece. As scarce as this coin is Legacy has just recently acquired a small hoard of Restrikes and is offering them for only $3,850.

The 49er Horseman Commemorative

The 49er Horseman Commemorative is even more spectacular when you hold it in your hand and you see its beauty in real life. Made from unparted Justh & Hunter Co. California Gold Rush Ingots recovered from the "Ship of Gold," the 49er Horseman is a one of a kind design fabricated after the original. Hand carved by master engraver Ron Landis using 150 year engraving techniques the 49er Horseman Commemorative is the closest thing to "original" without the $100,000.00 price tag. Struck by the Royal Canadian Mint and authorized by the California Historical Society, the 49er Horseman had a limited mintage of only 4,006 total coins, each being certified Gem-Proof condition by PCGS. Recent auctions have seen these coins sell for over $2,000 each. Currently Legacy is offering our customers the 49er Horseman as a special offer for only $1,499 each, while supplies last.
