In 1857, the S.S. Sonora from San Francisco, bound for New York, set sail with over two tons of California Gold Rush gold. After reaching Panama, the gold was transported across the country and reloaded aboard the famed side-wheel steamship, S.S. Central America. Half way through the voyage, the S.S. Central America sailed straight into a hurricane off the coast of North Carolina where violent waves from the storm cracked its hull. It sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, taking down with it more than 20% of Wall Street’s gold reserves. The loss became a substantial blow to the economy and triggered the "Panic of 1857" which developed into the worst depression of the 19th century. It was believed that the treasure was lost forever.

Some 130 years later, the Columbus America Discovery Group, using state of the art technology and investing several years of vigorous exploration, located the shipwreck and lost treasure resting on the ocean’s floor at a depth of more than 8,000 feet. The shipwreck site rendered up an amazing hoard of gold coins and ingots that were preserved in near perfect condition, as if they where housed in a time capsule from the time they sank. The find was heralded by Life Magazine as "The Greatest Treasure Ever Found." After a decade of conservation work and other legalities, the S.S. Central America shipwreck treasure was finally ready to be brought to the market.

In 2001 the highly anticipated initial sale of the S.S. Central America treasure was featured by Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses along with a couple of other less known retail companies. Christie's chairman, Lord Charles Hindlip, was so overwhelmed by the treasure, he referred to the gold coins and monetary ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck as being "National Treasures" and "America's Crown Jewels." The sales were an immediate success and exceeded many people's expectations. The entire treasure sold out, and in some cases, auction lots realized prices over 300% of their respective estimates.

Now some of the treasure is appearing in the marketplace. Legacy Rare Coin is a leading expert and specialized dealer of S.S. Central America. gold coins and monetary ingots.
