Classic Gold and Silver Commemoratives are considered by many to exhibit some of the best values in the rare coin market. Each coin represents a unique and significant story that makes these coins some of the most exciting coins to collect. Beginning in 1892 the U.S. Mint first produced a silver half dollar to celebrate our early U.S. History by commemorating the Columbian Exposition of 1492. This silver commemorative series increased in popularity and became one of the longest running series in U.S. coinage, lasting 62 years until 1954. Due to the popular demand of the silver commemoratives in 1903, the U.S. Mint produced the first gold dollar commemorating the Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson and President William McKinley. This gold series lasted until 1926, when the U.S. Mint discontinued the program after a successful 23 years. Today the Classic U.S. Gold and Silver Commemorative series has continued in popularity and are great coins to add to one’s rare coin portfolio.

The Classic Silver Commemoratives Series presented 60 different issues and many different varieties. Every coin is historically important and represents significant events in U.S. History. Silver Commemoratives are best to own in mint state condition and can cost as low as $100 dollars. For some of the finest known coins in this series, values can exceed $50,000 dollars. Within the series are key date issues that had lower mintages and are the most popular to collect. We strongly recommend the acquisition of the key date coins in this series.

The Classic Gold Commemoratives are as popular as, or even more popular than, the silver commemoratives. Just like the silver, the gold issues also commemorate some of the nation’s most proud achievements. The Gold Commemorative series only has 13 different coins. These coins are extremely popular, historically important and rare. The most exciting coins in the series are the $50 Gold Panama Pacific Exposition Commemoratives. The $50 Pan Pac is the United States' first official legal tender coin. The Pan Pac is an impressive piece of artwork weighing around 2.5 ounces and was released in both round and octagonal shape. The $50 Pan Pac "slug" is listed as #17 of the 100 Greatest U.S. coins. The Gold Commemorative Series can be very affordable to own and range in price from around $750 for a mint state coin up to $250,000 and beyond for the finest known $50 Pan Pac.
